Pickwick Bevan Bookmaker Blog

Pickwick Bevan Bookmakers are on course bookmakers who stand at a lot of the local West Country tracks including Exeter. I was able to join them at Wincanton for Kingwell Hurdle day and join in their day’s business.

When I arrived Paul Metcalfe explained the general practice of the firm and how the IT worked and how racecourse technologies really did supply all the kit and IT wear and the programme was very clever indeed. It incorporated the Betdaq odds alongside the book which helps make the business of being a bookie easier when they need to make quick decisions on laying off any money so that they can cover losses to some degree. I was then given far more responsibility than I thought I would as I proceeded to stand as front man taking bets all afternoon! This was a dream come true and to have a huge wodge of cash in your fist and being able to take bets up to £150, which actually was a winner, was exhilarating. It was really good to see the bookies angle on the punters in the sense that punters can be not very trusting of bookies and hostile at times but they should be kinder as a bookie is a friendly face as many regulars came and did business throughout the afternoon all with a smile and a joke from Paul. It was a great day and yet another amazing experience.
