Welcome to The Going: taking you behind the scenes of British racing

A very warm welcome to The Going, our blog that aims to take you as close to the heart of British racing as possible.

Why have we launched The Going?

We aim to take you behind-the-scenes of our sport, nationwide; from the excitement of racing at The Jockey Club's 15 courses to the quiet of the paddocks of The National Stud, and the promise that a morning holds at our training grounds in Newmarket, Lambourn or Epsom Downs to right inside the doors of our HQ in London. Whether you’re a racing expert or the sport is something new, we hope this will be a place of interest for you.

What can you expect from this blog?

The Going is a multi-author blog giving you an array of content, including posts, images, infographics, video and audio. We will give you big race and festival previews from our clerks of the course around the country and our racing department here in Holborn, updates and insights from our teams throughout The Jockey Club group all-year-round, perspectives from special guests and commentary on live industry matters, but hopefully in a way that’s interesting to you as racing fans and not simply navel gazing.

On the flipside, we don’t think this is a place to give you things like racecards or tips (there’s plenty of great media and websites for that), but in return we won’t be trying to sell you anything either! Also, don’t forget the British Horseracing Authority is the governing body and regulator of our sport, not us, so we’ll leave commenting on the Rules of Racing, enquiries and related matters to them.

Using the latest digital design principles (I’m told!), The Going has been built to recognise what device you are using and scales and populates the content accordingly. You’ll also see you can click or tap on ‘Categories’ to tailor things to what you’re most interested in and there's options to share all content on your social platforms or via email.

What's in it for us?

We’ve launched The Going because The Jockey Club is governed by Royal Charter to do everything within our power to act for the good of British racing. In the big picture, we think this blog can help, if you visit us often and interact with our content and each other. It's as simple as that.

A few words to finish

On a personal level, I’m looking forward to posting regular updates here. In the remainder of 2013, I expect to talk about our ambitions for the future of British racing, the importance of staging quality racing with healthy prize money levels, our planned £45m development at Cheltenham, 2014 fixtures and the climax of the Flat season.

British racing is the best in the world; we welcome more of the best horses to race and train here than anywhere else, along with the most talented trainers and jockeys. While many other sports have been in decline, in many ways, racing is a sport on the up. We face constant challenges, whether that has been riding out the recession or the pressing need for updated government regulation to help achieve a fair return from the betting industry for the profits made on our sport, as has been brought in to support the racing industries in France and Ireland. However, looking outwardly, with around 6 million people a year going racing and more than a third of the country tuning into Channel 4 Racing at some point so far this year, all involved in our sport can be proud of the enjoyment racing brings to so many people.

Britain’s second biggest spectator sport, the second biggest contributor to Britain’s economy in sport and the second biggest employer in Britain in sport; racing makes a really important contribution to Britain’s way of life, and I’m proud The Jockey Club is at the heart of all that, staging so much of the show and putting every penny we make along the way back into the sport, as we have been since 1750. I hope you enjoy The Going ahead.
